Mercy, how in the world did I get tangled up in all of this copywriting stuff?
Well, to be honest, it seems like a large chunk of people in the field of professional communications—regardless of whether or not they’re freelance professionals—made their way into the industry just like I did.
That's right, I initially got into creative writing, editing and mass communications—seemed easy enough from the get-go, at least—as a way to prepare myself for life as an attorney.
Pretty exciting stuff, huh?
After volunteering as an LDS missionary in Córdoba, Argentina for a couple of years—ya know, those young guys with white shirts and ties on bikes—I returned to the United States with the idea that I'd receive my undergraduate, successfully complete law school and sail off into the proverbial sunset with a smoking hot wife, children and hefty monthly paycheck.
A Fortunate Change In Plans
Well, as is generally the case in life, things didn't work out quite as I'd planned. Believe me, I’m glad they didn’t. Currently, I couldn’t be happier.
With the legal field completely saturated with young, desperate lawyers, I soon realized that a new career path would need to be forged.
Not only was I not genius enough for law school, but I sure as heck didn't want to spend the majority of my life pouring over interminable legal documents.
So there I was with two degrees in Latin American Studies and Spanish—I told you I wasn’t all that smart—and nowhere to turn but back in the general direction of my parents’ basement.
Copywriting Rears Its Ugly Head
Fortunately, though my pair of academic degrees were certainly irregular, I was able to obtain an internship as a Branded Content Writer at Fusion 360, an ad agency in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The company took a gamble on me, and for that I'll always be grateful.
From "Office Greenie" and "Part-Time Writer Dude" to Managing Copywriter, the various communicative fields of B2B and B2C marketing have been great to me.
It’s for that very reason I’ve always felt this anxiousness to get ahead and take in as much information about copywriting as humanly possible.
Soon, my quest me led me to where I am today—managing, directing and producing awesome copy under the name of Echelon Copy.
A Few of the Finer, More Personal Points
Now that all of the important stuff is finally out of the way, let’s get to the general, obligatory rigmarole: my name is Lucas Miller and I’m the Founder and Head Copywriter at Echelon Copy.
Boy, probably should’ve started with that stuff, huh?
Whatever the case, I’m 25 years old and live in Provo, Utah where I make a living as the Head Copywriter here at Echelon Copy.
When I’m not writing, sending emails or trying to think of something clever to say on Twitter, I’m usually engaging in a few of my favorite activities/hobbies:
- Watching Oklahoma City Thunder basketball
- Eating frozen pizza
- Ghost hunting [admittedly, a bit of a beginner]
